Certificate of Propaedeutic Studies – Undergraduate Online
Overview
The Certificate of Propaedeutic Studies – Undergraduate (Online) is an 18-credit program for seminarians in their propaedeutic year who do not yet hold a bachelor’s degree and intend to continue into the Discipleship Stage of priestly formation—beginning philosophical studies (Certificate of Philosophical Studies or BA in Philosophy) and ultimately the Master of Divinity (Seminary) in preparation for ordination.
In line with PPF6 guidance, students may take up to three courses per semester (maximum 9 credits) from general education or appropriate non-general education areas such as Introduction to Scripture, spirituality, and the Catechism; Philosophy courses are not permitted during the propaedeutic year. Course selection is flexible and finalized in consultation with the student’s diocese or religious order to meet individual needs.

Admissions to the Program
Students may transfer or apply up to 9 credits from an accredited Master’s program or other graduate coursework, with approval of the Propaedeutic Certificate Program Director. Coursework may be from an external college or university or from HACS. The final 9 credits of the program must be earned at HACS.

The Program Objectives
- Understand and be able to communicate the basic themes of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, including doctrine, liturgy, sacraments, morality, prayer and Sacred Scripture, as aligned with diocesan guidelines and the PPF6.
- Understand and be able to communicate the basic elements of Catholic spirituality and the life of prayer, as aligned with diocesan guidelines and the PPF6.
- Understand and be able to communicate overarching themes in Church History and the development of Western Civilization as aligned with diocesan guidelines and the PPF6.
