Navigating the Real-World Challenges of Deacon Formation

Too many good men feel called to serve as permanent deacons, but never make it past the application stage. Why? Because the demands of traditional formation models simply don’t work for men with families, jobs, and parish responsibilities.

At Holy Apostles College & Seminary, we believe formation should meet the candidate where he is—without compromising the richness of Catholic intellectual tradition. That’s why we offer a fully online, master’s-level intellectual formation program specifically designed to complement diocesan formation pathways.

Our goal? To ensure that no vocation is lost to time, distance, or circumstance.

Program Highlights

Fully Online & Asynchronous: Candidates study on their own time, from anywhere in the world.

Paced for Working Men: One class per semester is the norm, allowing men to thrive in ministry, marriage, and fatherhood while pursuing their vocation.

No Residency Requirement: Intellectual formation that’s flexible enough to fit real life.

Master’s Degree Culmination: This program includes Master’s-level, Magisterium-faithful curriculum covering Scripture, Theology, Liturgy, Pastoral care, Canon Law, and Evangelization, culminating in a Master of Arts in Pastoral Studies.

How Does It Work?

Format: 100% online, asynchronous courses with weekly discussion boards and assignments.

Faculty: Courses taught by Holy Apostles professors—faithful to the Church, rooted in the tradition.

In-Person Options: Optional summer intensives or local parish-based practicums available as desired.

Cost: Standard HACS tuition per credit hour (graduate or undergraduate). No extra travel or lodging fees.

Admission: Applicants must be approved by their (arch)diocese for candidacy. Transcripts are required; those without a degree begin with the Aspirancy track.
