Rev. Richard A. Mietzelfeld came to Holy Apostles College and Seminary in 1958 as Academic Dean and professor of philosophy and fine arts; from the years 1960-1968 he served as Rector of the institution. To thank him for his many years of faithful service, he was honored by Holy Apostles in 2001 with the degree, Doctor of Liberal Arts, honoris causa.
In addition, Rev. Mietzelfeld spent twenty years as professor of philosophy at Russell Sage College in New York and assisted weekly for twenty-two years at St. Monica’s parish in Northford, Connecticut.
Rev. Mietzelfeld was an avid classical music listener. He donated his entire collection of 19,474 LP records and 11,000 CDs to Amherst College in Massachusetts.
Rev. Mietzelfeld lived for 35 years in the Berkshire Mountains in Hancock, Massachusetts. During his time as Rector at Holy Apostles, he instituted a weekly concert series for seminarians every Sunday night. He said that “music enriches the spiritual life and deepens the life of prayer”.
Upon his death in August of this year, Rev. Mietzelfeld served the Roman Catholic Church as a priest for fifty eight years. Plans are currently underway for a Memorial Mass and Reception at Holy Apostles College and Seminary in Cromwell, Connecticut. More information will be forthcoming.
May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
